A roof soaring to the heavens highlights the $2.5 million addition to the Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Broomfield, CO. Designed by Lawler Architecture with RWC as structural engineer, the building's steeply pitched ceilings incorporate dramatic stained-glass dormer windows. Along with a column-free sanctuary, the new addition includes a large fellowship hall, library and offices. The new superstructure, utilizing timber framing, with structural steel frames over the sanctuary, is founded on a drilled pier foundation system to solve the problems of expansive soils at the site.
Oldest Operating School
Garden Place Academy, Denver Public Schools' oldest operating school building - a large elementary facility serving a vast neighborhood area in north Denver, was in desperate need of classroom space. To remedy the situation required being sensitive to the historic fabric of the neighborhood icon. Reddy & Reddy Architects' design of the needed classroom spaces sensitively blended the new with the old while improving the facility's overall appearance. To provide the delicate structural engineering solutions needed, RWC required the removal and re-support of critical existing load-bearing masonry walls. Since the original construction drawings were not available, extensive field observations were necessary to creatively integrate and match new construction with the existing conditions. Completed during the 2002 school year, construction work, by Kirsche Construction, was successfully planned, minimizing disruption to classroom activities.
