This concrete girder bridge is the first major road project in the Denver area to use “retained earth” precast concrete abutments. It is the longest two-span bridge, as well as the only concrete girder bridge, on the Denver-Boulder turnpike.
RWC’s design team determined that this 15-million gallon reservoir could be repaired for half the cost of replacement. Procedures were developed for controlled demolition sequencing to protect against concrete explosion due to locked-in stress levels. Additionally, a unique grid system of beams was developed to withstand increased burdens on the foundation system created when the reservoir was buried to prolong its working life.
